Skipper Simon Callan led Bishop Auckland Under 18’s to a well deserved victory against Washington. No8 Callan was outstanding in both attack and defence, leading his side by example. He was well supported in the forwards by Kieron Hutchinson, Chris Morrell, Stefan Lawson and Daniel Larn
Bishop’s dominated the first half and were rewarded with an early penalty which was converted by scrum half Steven Middlemas. Washington levelled the scores with a penalty, but Bishops’ extended their lead when second row forward Stefan Lawson scored from a tapped penalty.
Bishops’ backs were being supplied with plenty of possession, and wingers Andrew Cassidy and Steven Roe both made great attacking runs, only being denied from scoring by some brave cover tackling from the home side.
In the second half, Bishops’ scored the try of the game when Callan linked with fellow forwards Hutchinson and Matthew Barnish inside their own half. when the ball was passed down the backs, Centre Tom Burn kicked ahead and fellow centre James Greathead followed up to gather the ball and force his way clear to score and excellent try. Middlemas kicked the extra points.
The visitors extended their lead further when Middlemas converted his second penalty.
The home sides closed the gap when they scored a well deserved try through their strong running centre.
